Intergenerational Learning: A Review of the Literature

by Vivian L. Gadsden and Marcia Hall

Research on intergenerational learning within families includes a range of studies that focus on the transmission of beliefs and practices and the modeling of behaviors from generation to generation. That is, it seeks to understand better the impact of families of origin on children's individual behaviors and family practices throughout the lifespan. Intergenerational learning issues cut across multiple disciplines, from psychology, to medicine, to public policy (Fitzgerald et al., 1995).

Role Transitions: A Review of the Literature

by Will J. Jordan

This paper is a review of the social and behavioral science research literature on the transition to the role of fatherhood. Adult and adolescent males undergo this transition within the context of dyadic relationships (either married, or unmarried couples; with resident or non-resident fathers). The male-female couples raise their children within a larger social and familial network of relatives, friends, and acquaintances.

Co-Parenting: A Review of the Literature

by Terry Arendell

Co-parenting encompasses several meanings. In some cases, it is synonymous with shared parenting. Other times it basically refers to father presence in the lives of children and their mothers, no matter how limited the parental involvement. Mothers still carry the lion's share of parenting responsibility. Maternal childrearing is mostly taken for granted and fathers' involvement compared to or juxtaposed over and against mothers', including in discussions of co-parenting.

Joblessness and Unemployment: A Review of the Literature

by Patrick Mason

This literature review attempts to gather evidence on the relationship between African American male economic potential in the formal sector of the economy and transitions in African American family structure and marital stability. By economic potential in the formal sector, we mean the capacity to obtain labor and property income from legal economic opportunities. Marital status and family transitions are addressed with reference to two particular sets of activities: a) marriage and divorce; and, b) childbirth and abortion.
